Congressman Kildee: Bipartisan and Independent Commission Needed to Investigate “Troubling Connections” Between Trump and Russia

February 15, 2017

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) today spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives calling for a “bipartisan and independent commission” to examine President Donald Trump and his administration’s “troubling connections” with Russia. Congressman Kildee’s call comes after Michael Flynn, Trump’s National Security Advisor, resigned this week and media reports have raised questions about Trump aides being in “constant touch” with senior Russian officials during the campaign.

Congressman Kildee’s remarks on the floor are below:

“National Security Advisor Michael Flynn’s resignation is no substitute for answers to the serious questions that remain over President Trump’s questionable connections to Russia. Federal investigators believe that Flynn, who held secret communications with Russia’s Ambassador, could have been compromised or even the subject of blackmail. The Justice Department disclosed this danger to the White House weeks ago – yet the President allowed Flynn to remain in his national security position.

“Flynn’s conduct is only the tip of the iceberg. There are serious and unanswered questions that remain. Our national security is at stake, and the American people deserve answers. Did the President or others know or direct Flynn’s secret communications with Russia? Why did the White House sit on its hands for weeks, even after being told its National Security Advisor could have been compromised? Were Trump campaign officials colluding with the Russians?

“Congress must call a bipartisan and independent commission to fully investigate these troubling connections between the Trump Administration and Russia. We owe the American people no less than the absolute truth.”
