Kildee Applauds Action on H.Res. 233 Telling Iran to Release American Political Prisoners

The U.S. House of Representatives, in a unanimous vote, passed a resolution introduced by Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) calling on Iran to release Amir Hekmati and the other American political prisoners it continues to hold.

The congressional resolution reads, in part, “Iran should release all detained Americans immediately and provide any information it possesses regarding any Americans that have disappeared within its borders.” The U.S. Senate passed a similar resolution on May 12, 2015.

“Today Congress spoke with one voice to tell Iran that it cannot continue to hold American political prisoners like Amir Hekmati if they are serious about reengaging the global community,” Congressman Kildee said. “The world needs to know Amir’s name because he is a real person – not just a pawn in a geopolitical struggle between Iran and the rest of the world. He is innocent, yet has been held prisoner in Iran for 1,386 days. It is long past time for him to be reunited with his family in Michigan,” Congressman Kildee said.

“I thank Chairman Ed Royce, Ranking Member Eliot Engel and every Member of Congress for unanimously supporting this bipartisan resolution. The onus is now on Iran to do what is right and release Amir and the other Americans it holds,” Congressman Kildee said.

“We are extremely grateful for Congressman Kildee’s continued efforts to bring our son and brother Amir home from Iran,” the Hekmati family said in a statement. “He has fought tirelessly for Amir’s freedom since coming to Congress, and our family is forever grateful for his unyielding support. The bipartisan coalition of Members of Congress which he has organized calling for Iran to release Amir gives us hope and strength.”

Last week, Congressman Kildee joined Michigan State Senate Democratic Leader Jim Ananich and Sarah Hekmati in Lansing to announce a bipartisan resolution in the State Senate supporting the passage of H. Res 233 and the freedom of Amir and the other American political prisoners. It passed last week on a unanimous vote.
