Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Great Lakes Funding Cuts

March 3, 2017

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today after it was reported that the Trump Administration has planned to cut Great Lakes restoration efforts by 97 percent:

“These cuts to Great Lakes protection efforts proposed in the President’s budget are extreme and dangerous. Cutting the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative by 97 percent, including funding to combat invasive species like Asian Carp, would put the world’s largest freshwater supply and our way of life at risk. The Great Lakes propel our economy, generating billions in annual economic activity and supporting 1.5 million good-paying jobs in the tourism, boating and fishing industries.

“Protecting the Great Lakes has never been a partisan issue and it shouldn’t be now under a new administration. If these careless cuts are presented to Congress, I will fight them in every way that I can.”
