March 31, 2016

Winner will have their Artwork on display on U.S. Capitol Grounds in Washington, DC for one year

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) announced today that the 2016 Congressional Art Competition has begun, encouraging all high school students (grades 9-12) who live in the Fifth Congressional District to submit artwork for the competition. "The Congressional Art Competition is a great opportunity to showcase the talent and creativity of high schoolers throughout Michigan and the nation. I am pleased to sponsor the competition in Michigan's fifth district, and I encourage all students to participate," Congressman Kildee said. "It is important to provide opportunities for students to be creative and expressive through the arts, and I am excited to see this year's art work from students across the country." The first place winner will be invited to attend a ribbon cutting and winners reception in Washington in June. Their artwork will be on display for one year in the Cannon Tunnel to the U.S. Capitol along with the winners from other congressional districts across the country. Each spring, a nationwide high school arts competition is sponsored by the members of the U.S. House of Representatives Congressional Art Caucus. The contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation and in the Fifth Congressional District. An online gallery of last year's artwork can be found here. Last year's winner was Swartz Creek's Ashlee Stimson from The Valley School. The winning piece was a mixed media portrait entitled "Killer Queen."  The artwork must be two-dimensional and can be no larger than 28 inches high, 28 inches wide, and 4 inches deep, even when framed. No framed piece should weigh more than 15 pounds. Along with the artwork, each entrant must securely attach a Student Information and Release Form to the back of the artwork. The form will be emailed to the student after submitting the application form here. All art submissions must follow the art competition guidelines and be submitted no later than Friday, April 29th at 5:00 p.m. ET, and may be dropped off at Congressman Kildee's district office at 111 S. Saginaw St., #3B, in Flint. Students can also call Congressman Kildee's office at (810) 238-8627 to schedule a time for entries to be delivered to staff during mobile office hours in Bay, Saginaw, Arenac or Iosco Counties.
