Congressman Dan Kildee Announces 2019 Congressional Art Competition

March 22, 2019

Winner Will Have Their Artwork on Display in U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, announced today that the 2019 Congressional Art Competition has begun, encouraging all high school students (grades 9-12) who live in the Fifth Congressional District to submit artwork for the competition.

"I am happy to once again host this year's Congressional Art Competition. Each year this competition gives us the chance to see beautiful pieces of art that represent the very best of Michigan's Fifth Congressional District. This annual competition is a great opportunity to celebrate the hard work of mid-Michigan's student artists. I look forward to welcoming the winner of the Congressional Art Competition to Washington, D.C. this year as they get to see their artwork on display in the U.S. Capitol," said Congressman Kildee.

The first-place winner of this year's competition will be invited to attend a ribbon cutting and winners reception in Washington in June. The student artwork will be on display for one year in the Cannon Tunnel to the U.S. Capitol along with the winners from other congressional districts across the country.

Each spring, a nationwide high school arts competition is sponsored by the members of the U.S. House of Representatives Congressional Art Caucus. The contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation and in the Fifth Congressional District. An online gallery of last year's artwork can be found here. Last year's winner was Swartz Creek High School senior, McKenna Marsh. The winning piece was a pencil drawing entitled "Justice." A high-resolution photo of Marsh's artwork can be viewed here.

The artwork must be two-dimensional and can be no larger than 26 inches high, 26 inches wide and 4 inches deep, including the frame. No framed piece should weigh more than 15 pounds. Along with the artwork, each entrant must securely attach a Student Information and Release Form to the back of the artwork. More information can be viewed here.

All art submissions must follow the art competition guidelines and be submitted no later than Friday, April 26th at 5:00 p.m. ET. Art can be dropped off at Congressman Kildee's district office at 601 South Saginaw St., Suite 403 in Flint or arrange alternative delivery options with Congressman Kildee's staff.
