Subcommittees Will Allow Kildee to Advocate for Fair Trade Deals for Workers, Economic Relief for Families and Seniors

WASHINGTON—Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, was appointed to serve on two subcommittees on the Ways and Means Committee - the influential Trade and Worker & Family Support subcommittees.

The Trade Subcommittee covers all issues related to international trade, including trade agreements with other countries, tariffs and customs, and international trade rules. In Congress, Congressman Kildee has been focused on expanding workers' rights and protecting American workers, stopping unfair trade practices, such as currency manipulation and dumping, and expanding markets to send American-made goods across the world. The subcommittee also has jurisdiction over the Trade Adjustment Assistance Program, which provides aid to workers who have lost their jobs or whose wages have been reduced due to trade fluctuations. As a member of the committee in the last Congress, Kildee fought to improve and ultimately pass the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement, replacing the disasterous North American Free Trade Agreement.

The Worker & Family Support Subcommittee oversees a range of critical programs that help workers, children and families. Specifically, the Subcommittee oversees the federal-state unemployment insurance program, the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, child care, Social Services block grants like Meals on Wheels, foster care, the Supplemental Security Income program and maternal and children health and development. As a member of the committee in the last Congress, Kildee introduced legislation to expand the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit, which would help lift families out of poverty, help grow the middle class and put money in the pockets of workers.

"I am grateful to continue serving on the powerful Ways and Means Committee, where I will continue my work to fight for fair trade deals and ensure that we provide additional economic support to families during this pandemic," Congressman Kildee said. "Congress must do more to ensure fair trade, rebuild our economy and ensure tax relief for working families, not Wall Street. I thank Chairman Richard Neal for his confidence in me to serve on these important subcommittees."

"As we begin the 117th Congress, I'm proud to share our subcommittees' chairs and Democratic members,"said Chairman Neal."Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic downturn, Americans across the country depend on our help and leadership now more than ever. With the expertise and dedication of our subcommittee chairs, workers and families can rest assured that their priorities will receive the necessary attention and care they deserve. I look forward to working with my fellow Ways and Means colleagues as well as the new Biden Administration to advance solutions to our nation's most pressing challenges."

Congressman Dan Kildee serves as Chief Deputy Whip, part of the Democratic leadership in the 117th Congress. The Chief Deputy Whip acts as an important liaison among Members of Congress and the Democratic leadership team to build support for Democratic priorities. Kildee also serves on the Budget Committee which is responsible for enacting budget policy and legislative oversight over the nation's budget. Each year, the Budget Committee develops the annual budget resolution to set levels of federal spending.
