Congressman Dan Kildee on Latest Unemployment Numbers

June 18, 2020

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus and member of the Ways and Means Committee, issued the following statement after the latest weekly jobless numbers showed 1.5 million new Americans filed unemployment claims:

"Just this week, the Vice President called the coverage of the coronavirus ‘overblown'. While the Trump Administration is eager to declare ‘Mission Accomplished', we still have double-digit unemployment and millions of Americans out of work. Just last week, another million and a half people filed for unemployment insurance. Many families are still greatly suffering from the coronavirus pandemic, and their jobs will not come back as fast as they were lost.

"Mitch McConnell must take up The Heroes Act immediately to extend unemployment benefits and help the millions of Americans who are out of work."
