Kildee Unveils "Make it in America" Jobs Plan with Democratic Colleagues to Boost American Manufacturing, Spur Job Creation and Grow Economy

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) today joined House Democrats, including Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD-05), to unveil the "Make it in America" jobs plan, which would revitalize our nation's manufacturing base and helping create high-skill, high-wage jobs. "The ‘Make it in America' plan is a job-creator that will help revitalize manufacturing in Michigan and across the nation," Congressman Kildee said. "Over the last century, manufacturing, especially automotive manufacturing, has played a vital role in communities I represent, including Flint, Saginaw and Bay City. Democrats and Republicans should come together and pass these bills immediately to help rebuild our manufacturing base and invest in companies that locate here, not overseas. When products are made in America, Michiganders win." The legislative package, made up of several bills, focuses on four key areas: developing a national manufacturing strategy, increasing manufacturing exports to other countries, encouraging businesses to bring innovation and jobs back to the U.S., and investing in training and securing the skilled workforce needed to support domestic manufacturing in the twenty-first century. Congressman Kildee previously spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives about the need for a national manufacturing policy, including the "Make it in America" plan, calling it "a real jobs plan for our country." One component of the "Make it in America" plans calls for the elimination of tax breaks for corporations that export American jobs overseas. "It's time that we end tax breaks for companies that ship our manufacturing jobs overseas and instead support tax credits for businesses that bring jobs back home to Michigan and America," Congressman Kildee said. "Reinvigorating our manufacturing sector is the best way to create good-paying and highly-skilled jobs that will grow the middle class and our economy." Since 2010, the U.S. economy has added over a half a million manufacturing jobs. The "Make it in America" plan would enact policies that would help spur additional job creation in Michigan and across the U.S. Many of the proposals in "Make it in America" plan are bipartisan and have the broad support of both business and labor leaders.
