June 30, 2021

Federal Grant Will Support Head Start, Early Head Start Programs at Genesee Intermediate School District

WASHINGTON—Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today announced a $12,019,415 federal grant to fund Head Start and Early Head Start educational opportunities in Genesee County.
The federal grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), will be awarded to Genesee Intermediate School District. Funding is available as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, supported by Congressman Kildee.
Head Start and Early Head Start are early childhood education programs that promote children's development through services that support education, health and family well-being. Programming is administered by local public, private non-profit and for-profit agencies. The programs include physical, cognitive, social and emotional development programming; child learning services in reading, math and science; nutritious meals; health and developmental screenings; oral and mental health support; behavioral and special needs services and family services.
"High-quality early childhood and education programs help to put our kids on a path to success," Congressman Kildee said. "I am proud to announce this federal grant, as a part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, to support local Head Start and Early Head Start programs in Genesee County."
Since coming to Congress, Congressman Dan Kildee has been an advocate for early childhood education. In the wake of the Flint water crisis, Kildee successfully advocated for federal grants to expand Head Start and Early Head Start services for Flint children. In June 2020, Kildee announced over $20 million in federal grants to fund Head Start programs in mid-Michigan. Recently Kildee also announced nearly $3 million in federal grants to support mid-Michigan Head Start programs.
