July 2, 2020

Investment Will Support Head Start Programs for Local Children

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today announced a nearly $10 million in federal grant to Saginaw County to help fund Head Start educational opportunities for children in mid-Michigan.

The federal grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), includes $9,524,182 for the Saginaw Intermediate School. Head Start is an early childhood education program that promotes children's development through services that support education, health and family well-being. Programming is administered by local public, private nonprofit and for-profit agencies. The program includes child learning services in reading, math and science; nutritious meals; health and developmental screenings; oral and mental health support; behavioral and special needs services and family services.

"Since 1967, Saginaw County has offered quality early education through Head Start programs. I am proud to announce this grant for Saginaw Intermediate School District, so that the county can continue to offer these critical services," said Congressman Kildee. "We cannot overstate the importance of Head Start programs for our children. When a student receives a high-quality early education, they are set up for success in their continued learning and development. I am grateful for the teachers, staff and volunteers that make these programs possible for our youth."

Since coming to Congress, Congressman Dan Kildee has been an advocate for early childhood education. In the wake of the Flint water crisis, in March 2016, Congressman Kildee successfully advocated for other federal grants to expand Head Start and Early Head Start services for Flint children. In July 2019, Kildee announced over $30 million in federal grants to fund Head Start programs throughout mid-Michigan. Recently, in June 2020, Congressman Kildee announced over $20 million in federal grants to support Head Start programs in Genesee County.
