Congressman Kildee Announces Nearly $2 Million in Federal Grants to Local Health Centers for Coronavirus Testing
Money Recently Passed by Congress Will Increase Access to Testing for Great Lakes Bay Region
Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, announced today that $1,800,211 in federal grants will be awarded to four mid-Michigan health centers to expand coronavirus testing throughout the Great Lakes Bay region.
The federal grants, awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, are a result of the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act, the fourth emergency aid bill supported by Congressman Kildee and signed into law on April 25. This bill included $25 billion nationwide for to expand access to coronavirus testing. Community health centers are a critical component to helping serve rural and underserved communities.
The federal grants include:
- Sterling Area Health Center in Sterling will receive $229,654
- Great Lakes Bay Health Center in Saginaw will receive $953,869
- Hamilton Community Health Network in Flint will receive $454,009
- Genesee Health System in Flint will receive $162,679
"Expanding coronavirus testing is key to safely reopening our economy," Congressman Kildee said. "Every Michigander who wants a coronavirus test should be able to. As we fight the coronavirus, having a national testing strategy is critical to protecting public health. I am pleased to announce these federal grants and I will continue to work in Congress to bring critical resources and medical equipment to Michigan."
In April, Congressman Kildee announced $4 million in federal health care grants for Mid-Michigan behavioral health care centers. Previously, Congressman Kildee also announced almost $4 million in federal grants to four local health centers in the Fifth Congressional District to help combat the coronavirus pandemic.
