Congressman Kildee to Host Virtual Veterans and First Responders Recreation Week

September 17, 2020

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, will virtually host the fourth annual Veterans and First Responders Recreation Week, from September 14 through September 20.

The event will encourage veterans and first responders to participate in outdoor activities. Studies have shown that recreational activity helps reduce stress and alleviate symptoms of PTSD for veterans and first responders. These outdoor activities increase function and independence, promote wellness and increase quality of life. The goal is to collectively log 2,000 miles and 500 hours of outdoor activities by participants. The event is being hosted in partnership with State Representatives Sheryl Kennedy (D-Davison) and Brian Elder (D-Bay City).

Veterans, first responders and their families are encouraged to recreate responsibly in outdoor activities, including running, walking, biking, hiking, kayaking and fishing. Participants are encouraged to log their activity, miles and hours on Congressman Kildee's Virtual Activity Log with photos of their outdoor activities.

"Getting outdoors, especially during a pandemic is a great way to stay active and stay connected to family, friends and community members while practicing social distancing. While this year's Veterans and First Responders Recreation Day is a bit different this year due to the pandemic, I look forward to seeing the exciting outdoor activities everyone participates in throughout our community," said Congressman Kildee.

Congressman Kildee has been a champion for veterans and first responders in Congress. In 2018, Kildee introduced the VET PFAS Act to ensure that veterans and their families exposed to toxic chemicals at military installations get the health care services and benefits they need through the U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs. Since 2017, Kildee has hosted the annual Veterans and First Responders Recreation Event in person across the Fifth Congressional District including in Genesee, Saginaw and Bay Counties.
