Congressman Kildee on Importance of Roe v. Wade for Michigan

May 11, 2022

WASHINGTON—Congressman Dan Kildee released the following statement after the U.S. Senate failed to pass the Women's Health Protection Act due to the filibuster, which would codify Roe v. Wade into federal law and ensure constitutional rights to health care aren't limited by income, background, or zip code:

"I am disappointed by the outcome of today's vote in the Senate. A woman's health care decisions should be up to her and her doctor—not politicians or judges. For nearly fifty years, our nation's laws have protected the right of women to make choices about their own bodies and futures. But, if Roe v. Wade is overturned, Michigan's 1931 state law would snap back into effect, making it a felony for a woman to get an abortion, even in cases of rape and incest. We should not make it harder and more dangerous for women to get the health care they need. In Congress, I will never stop fighting for women's rights."
