Federal Grant Will Support Local Early Head Start Programs

WASHINGTON—Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today announced a nearly $1.3 million federal grant to fund Carman-Ainsworth Community School's Early Head Start program in Genesee County.

The $1,295,378 federal grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), will support Early Head Start for 75 children and families. This funding is a result of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, which Congressman Kildee helped pass and support.

Early Head Start is an early childhood education program that promotes children's development through services that support education, health and family well-being. Programming is administered by local public, private non-profit and for-profit agencies. The program includes child learning services in reading, math and science; nutritious meals; health and developmental screenings; oral and mental health support; behavioral and special needs services and family services.

"When we invest in our children, we invest in their future. Early Head Start education opportunities give children and their families the resources they need for a brighter future," said Congressman Kildee. "I am proud to announce this federal grant for Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools, which hosts incredible Early Head Start programs. I am grateful to the teachers, workers and volunteers who support our children every day."

Since coming to Congress, Congressman Dan Kildee has been an advocate for early childhood education. In the wake of the Flint water crisis, Kildee successfully advocated for federal grants to expand Head Start and Early Head Start services for Flint children.Recently, Kildee announced over $20 million in federal grants for Head Start and Early Head Start programs in Genesee and Saginaw Counties. Additionally, Congressman Kildee supported, and the U.S. House of Representatives recently passed, a seven-bill funding package for Fiscal Year 2022, which included over $12 billion in federal funding for Head Start programs across the country.
