President Biden, Congressman Kildee Highlight How Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Will Benefit Michigan Families

November 17, 2021

Bipartisan Legislation Invests $10 Billion in Michigan Infrastructure Improvements, including $110 Million for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

DETROIT—Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today joined President Joe Biden on his trip to General Motor's Factory Zero in Detroit to highlight funding for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This legislation, supported by Republicans and Democrats and signed into law Monday by the president, includes at least $110 million in federal funding to install electric vehicle charging stations across Michigan.

"I am proud to have voted for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill and see this legislation signed into law. When we invest in infrastructure, we put Michiganders to work rebuilding roads, repairing bridges, replacing lead pipes and building electric vehicle charging stations across our state," said Congressman Kildee. "This investment will create good-paying jobs for Michiganders and ensure that we can compete in the global economy against our economic competitors like China. I will continue working with President Biden to expand electric vehicle production and ensure that these automobiles are made by union workers in Michigan."

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, Michigan currently has 769 public EV charging stations—a fraction of what's needed to meet anticipated demand. Nationwide, some consumers are hesitant to purchase an electric vehicle because they're concerned about access to charging. The bipartisan infrastructure law will help build a nationwide network of 500,000 EV chargers in public places like rest stops, government buildings and parks. According to the Economic Policy Institute, expanding EV charging stations will help to create 166,860 jobs nationwide over the next decade.

"Congressman Dan Kildee continues to be the leading voice for investing in infrastructure in small towns and communities, so folks in every part of the state can compete. And Dan and Debbie are responsible for the additional tax credit of $4,500 for union-made vehicles," said President Biden, referring to the Biden-Kildee-Stabenow electric vehicle tax credit for consumers, which Congressman Kildee is spearheading to make electric vehicles more affordable for Michiganders through the Build Back Better Act. This legislation would accelerate America's transition to electric vehicles, create good-paying American and union jobs and help combat climate change.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law delivers at least $10 billion in new infrastructure investments for Michigan, including:

  • Roads, Highways and Bridges: $7.3 billion to fix roads and $563 million for bridge replacement and repairs.
  • Public Transit: $1 billion to improve public transportation options across the state.
  • Ensuring Clean Water: $1.3 billion to improve water infrastructure across the state and ensure that clean, safe drinking water is a right in all communities.
  • Expansion of Electric Vehicles: $110 million to support the expansion of an EV charging network in the state. Michigan will also have the opportunity to apply for the $2.5 billion in grant funding dedicated to EV charging in the bill.
  • Expanded Internet and Broadband: $100 million to help provide broadband coverage across the state, including providing access to the at least 398,000 Michiganders who currently lack it.
  • Improving Airports: $363 million for infrastructure development for airports.
  • Protecting the Great Lakes: $1 billion in the Great Lake Restoration Initiative, which would be the largest investment in the program's history.
