Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on the Coup in Sudan

April 11, 2019

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement following the coup in Sudan:

"It appears that recent events in Sudan have presented an opportunity for real change. But all parties must ensure any transition is civilian led and free of violence. The Sudanese government must respect the right of its citizens to peacefully assemble and have their voices heard. I also call on the government of Sudan to transition power as quickly as possible to a leader selected by a fair and transparent democratic process to help the country recover from decades of mismanagement and human rights abuses.

"A peaceful civilian led transition would demonstrate that the Sudanese government is taking real steps forward and is committed to respecting human rights and improving its relationship with the United States."
