Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Flint Loan Forgiveness Announcement

August 1, 2017

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today after it was confirmed that the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) may forgive approximately $21 million in outstanding Drinking Water State Revolving Funds (DWSRF) loans owed by the city of Flint:

"The state of Michigan forgiving Flint's outstanding loans will free up money to make much-needed investments as the city recovers from the ongoing water crisis. I am glad that the Flint aid package, passed by Congress last year and signed into law by President Obama, allowed for such relief. Ensuring Flint gets the resources it needs to recover from this man-made crisis continues to be one of my top priorities."

Since March 2015, Congressman Kildee has repeatedly urged the state of Michigan and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to forgive Flint's DWSRF loans to free up additional money for the city's recovery efforts. Congressman Kildee has previously sent letters to the EPA and Governor Rick Snyder on this topic.
