Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Hearing on Anti-LGBT Legislation
Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today in advance of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on anti-LGBT bill, H.R. 2802, the First Amendment Defense Act: “The decision by the Republican majority of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform to defend discrimination against Americans because of who they love is despicable. H.R. 2802, the First Amendment Defense Act, is a harmful bill that would make it legal to discriminate against LGBT people. It gives private organizations and federal contractors the ability to refuse services to LGBT people, single mothers, and unmarried couples. “It is outrageous that the Republican majority has decided to hold a hearing targeting LGBT Americans on the one month anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting. In the wake of this act of hate against the LGBT community, elected Representatives should be standing up for equality, not defending discrimination. “I join my colleagues and call on all Members of Congress to oppose H.R. 2802.”
