Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on the Lead-Contaminated Water in Cannon House Office Building

July 5, 2016
Press Release

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today after the Architect of the Capitol announced there will be blood lead level testing for Members of Congress and their staff that have had high lead levels in the drinking water of Cannon House Office Building: “Today the Architect of the Capitol announced that blood lead level testing will be available for Members of Congress and their staff who are concerned about the drinking water in Cannon House Office Building after last week’s announcement of high lead levels. I understand the concern that my colleagues and their staffers have expressed. Lead is a dangerous neurotoxin and high levels of lead in water anywhere is a public health emergency. “But for Flint residents, who have had high levels of lead in their water for two years, it is long past time that Congress get serious about this serious health threat. Helping Flint families ought to be as much of a priority as ensuring safe water and health for those who work on Capitol Hill. “Every American deserves access to safe drinking water. America is the richest and most prosperous country in the world – we can afford to provide safe drinking water to our citizens.”
