Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Looming Republican Government Shutdown

April 24, 2017

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement regarding a looming Republican government shutdown if Congress does not do its job by the end of the week:

"Not even 100 days into President Trump's presidency, Republicans have once again manufactured a new crisis and brought us to the brink of a government shutdown. I strongly oppose shutting down the government because it will hurt our economy, punish our seniors and veterans, and potentially cost taxpayers billions of dollars.

"Republicans control the White House and both chambers of Congress, yet they're still unable to fulfill their most basic duty of keeping the government open. Lurching from one crisis to the next is irresponsible, dangerous and creates uncertainty that hurts families in my district.

"The American people overwhelmingly want Members of Congress to do their jobs and pass a responsible budget to keep the government open."
