Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Meeting with Canadian Ambassador to the U.S.

June 15, 2016

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today after meeting with Ambassador David MacNaughton, the new Canadian Ambassador to the United States: "I had the chance to welcome Canadian Ambassador MacNaughton to Capitol Hill today and congratulate him on his new position. Canada and the United States, particularly Michigan, have a great alliance and partnership. Ambassador MacNaughton clearly understands our nations' important relationship and how both our economies and people are connected more now than ever before. We had a very productive meeting today that focused on several issues of mutual interest, including trade, protecting our environment and water resources, and border security. "During the meeting, I also had a chance to raise my continued concerns with a Canadian plan to bury nuclear waste less than a mile from Lake Huron. Opposition to building an underground radioactive waste storage facility so close to the Great Lakes continues to grow on both sides of the border. Two delays by the Canadian government in recent months clearly demonstrate that this project is controversial and hopefully will be canceled. In Congress, I will continue to work with Democrats and Republicans who have raised objections to this proposal as we seek to protect the Great Lakes from radioactive contamination."
