Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Military Strikes in Syria

April 14, 2018
Press Release

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today after U.S. and allied forces conducted military strikes in Syria:

“I strongly condemn Bashar al-Assad’s use of chemical weapons on his own people. In killing his own people, Assad’s regime has violated international law and defied basic human decency. While I believe there must be a response to the Assad regime’s brutal war crimes, President Trump must come to Congress and seek an Authorization for the Use of Military Force. The U.S. Constitution grants Congress the sole power to declare war and the President must lay out a clear plan regarding any further military action. The people I represent deserve a debate in Congress over the scope, size and strategy of U.S. involvement in the Middle East. I strongly believe that any further military action must also be accompanied by diplomatic and humanitarian support, including providing refuge for those victims of terror fleeing Assad's brutal regime.”
