Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on NAFTA Renegotiation Notice
Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today after the Trump Administration’s formal NAFTA renegotiation notice was sent to Congress:
“I come from Flint, Michigan— we’ve seen the consequences of bad trade deals. Flint has lost 90 percent of its manufacturing jobs, in large part due to unfair deals like NAFTA. Especially in Michigan and the Midwest, many towns still face unique challenges, from declining population to job losses, as a result of these trade policies.
“Donald Trump ran for President as the world’s best negotiator. Here’s his chance to actually deliver. If we’re going to get it right, American trade policy must be fair and have the support of Democrats and Republicans. My constituents deserve trade policies that put American workers first.
“The President must work with Congress closely throughout this NAFTA renegotiation. Simply saying we are going to renegotiate NAFTA is not enough—details matter. The process must be open and transparent, not just to the big corporations involved in the negotiation, but to the public and the American worker. We must seek to eliminate special protections for corporations that incentivize them to ship American jobs overseas. For far too long, the game has been rigged in favor of corporations and against hardworking Americans.”
