April 7, 2020
Press Release
Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement after the death of former United Auto Workers (UAW) Secretary Treasurer Ruben Burks:
“Ruben Burks was an exceptional leader in our community, and I am deeply saddened by his passing.
“Ruben dedicated his life to fighting for the working men and women of America. He was a proud member of his union, starting as an assembly line worker at the Fisher Body Plant in Flint and rising to become the secretary-treasurer of the UAW, the first African American to hold that position. Throughout his over 60 years of service, Ruben helped to advance many important causes to benefit all workers, not just those in the union. I will miss Ruben’s friendship and mentorship.
“Jennifer and I extend our condolences to Ruben’s family and the entire UAW community during this difficult time.”
