Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on President-elect Biden’s Nomination of Katherine Tai as U.S. Trade Representative

December 10, 2020

WASHINGTON—Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus and member of the Ways and Means Committee, issued the following statement today after President-elect Joe Biden nominated Katherine Tai, Chief Trade Counsel on the House Ways and Means Committee, to serve as U.S. Trade Representative (USTR):

"President-elect Biden has made an outstanding choice in selecting Katherine Tai to serve as the next U.S. Trade Representative.

"As a member of the Ways and Means Committee's Trade Subcommittee, I have worked closely with Katherine to promote fair trade deals that put American workers first. I have seen first-hand Katherine's expertise and intellect when it comes to trade policy, especially when Congress replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement. I know that Katherine is committed to reorienting America's trade policies to prioritize the American worker and promote U.S. values through fair trade, especially strong labor and environmental standards. Katherine would also be the first woman of color to serve as U.S. Trade Representative and I applaud this historic nomination."

"As America faces increased global competition, especially from China, I know Katherine is the right person to lead our country's efforts to promote fair trade. While the Ways and Means Committee is losing a great talent, I look forward to working with Katherine after she is confirmed by the U.S. Senate for this new role."
