Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on President Trump’s Fiscal Year 2021 Budget

February 10, 2020

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus and a member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement after President Donald Trump released his Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 budget:

"A budget is a true statement of priorities, and President Trump's budget demonstrates he has little concern for America's middle class and our most vulnerable families. The President's proposed budget makes deep cuts to housing, health care, education, food assistance and community development, as well as to Medicare and Medicaid. Michigan families rely on these programs in order to live and to retire with dignity. The drastic Trump budget cuts are flat out wrong.

"The President repeatedly says he is going to protect your health care, but his budget demonstrates the opposite. The President's cuts to Medicare and Medicaid threaten health care for millions of Michiganders, especially the elderly and children. Just this past week, Trump also attacked Medicaid by turning the expansion program into a block grant program. Instead of taking away health care coverage, the President should work with Democrats in Congress to expand health care access, protect coverage for pre-existing conditions and lower costs for prescription drugs.

"These draconian cuts in the President's budget do not represent Michigan values."
