Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on President Trump’s Pledge to Close the Bump Stock Loophole

February 20, 2018

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today after President Donald Trump signaled his support to close the dangerous bump stock loophole, which Kildee has advocated to close for months:

"Dangerous bump stock devices that turn firearms into fully-automatic machine guns have no place on America's streets. I have previously introduced bipartisan legislation in Congress to close this dangerous loophole and I am glad that the President has added his voice calling for bump stocks to be banned. Getting bump stock devices off of our streets is one way that we can prevent senseless gun violence, but it should not be the only action Congress takes. I hope that Republicans and Democrats can work together to bring up other common sense gun reforms that both respect the Second Amendment and keep our children safe from gun violence."

In October 2017, Congressman Kildee—along with two Republicans and one Democrat— introduced the Closing the Bump Stock Loophole Act, which would allow the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to immediately regulate bump stocks and get them off of America's streets. The ATF Association, which represents former and current ATF employees, endorsed the bill.
