Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on President Trump’s Reversal of His Zero-Tolerance Child Separation Policy

June 20, 2018

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement after President Donald Trump temporarily reversed course and ended his Administration's zero-tolerance child separation policy that is tearing families apart at the southern border:

"We should not congratulate the President on being forced to end his own cruel policy that separates children from their families. Thousands of children have suffered and will forever be scarred by the Trump Administration's inhumane separation of families.

"President Trump has shamefully ended successful initiatives like the Family Case Management Program, which aided mothers and young children seeking asylum. Despite this program being an effective way to consider asylum applications, the President has instead separated and jailed families. As Americans, we must have a comprehensive immigration policy that both protects our borders and shows compassion to immigrants seeking asylum in this country."
