Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on President Trump’s State of the Union Address

February 6, 2019

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement after President Donald Trump's State of the Union address:

"I am ready to work with the President to get things done. I am glad the President highlighted the need to fix our infrastructure, lower the cost of prescription drugs and enact fair trade agreements that benefit the American worker. My constituents want Congress and the President to work together and solve the big challenges we face as a country. However, the President has a long history of saying one thing but not following through on his words.

"During the last State of the Union, the President promised a robust infrastructure plan that ultimately resulted in a lackluster proposal, leaving our communities without the resources they need to repair our crumbling roads, bridges and water systems. The President has promised to bring back manufacturing jobs, but thousands of American workers have since been laid off across the country this year, including in my district. And while the President promised to protect public health, we have seen his administration refuse to enact important drinking water protections while also gutting affordable health care through the Affordable Care Act.

"The President must rise to the occasion and lead on these important issues, with not just words but with real action. Unfortunately, the President's administration has so far been consumed most days by tweets, chaos and manufactured crises, including a recent government shutdown that cost our economy billions of dollars. This is no way to run a corner grocery store, let alone the world's largest economy. Now that Democrats are in the majority, we are working to pass an agenda that is for the people, including lowering health care costs, raising workers' wages, and cleaning up corruption in government."
