Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Recognition of Same-Sex Marriages Legally Performed in Michigan

February 4, 2015

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today calling on Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder to let therecent federal court injunction by U.S. District Court Judge Mark A. Goldsmith stand, requiring the state of Michigan to recognize over 300 same-sex marriages legally performed in Michigan on March 22, 2014:

"Governor Snyder, what are you waiting for? Every day you continue to wait, 321 loving Michigan couples continue to be denied their constitutional rights and full recognition under the law. Their marriages, performed in March of last year, were legally performed. Yet your administration continues to shamefully subject these couples to uncertainty and fear as they wait for your decision to see whether you will treat them as equal citizens under the law. "It is bad enough that as Governor, you and Attorney General Bill Schuette have wasted millions in taxpayer dollars defending Michigan's discriminatory same-sex marriage ban. But continuing to deny these committed couples the recognition they have long been denied would be simply cruel. "Governor Snyder, I implore you to do the right thing and let the federal court's ruling take effect, bringing long-awaited and rightful recognition to these loving Michigan couples."
