Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Situation in Sudan

June 29, 2019

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement before the June 30 deadline for the Sudanese Transitional Military Council to transfer power to a civilian-led government. Yesterday, the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee called for the Trump Administration to sanction Sudan's Rapid Support Forces, which have used brutal violence against pro-democracy protestors in recent weeks.

"As we near the deadline for the Transitional Military Council to transfer power, the world is watching and I implore the Sudanese government to honor its commitment and peacefully transition power to a civilian-led ruling body. I fully support Chairman Engel's call for increased sanctions against the Rapid Support Forces for their repeated failure to respect basic human rights. I stand in solidarity with the Sudanese people who are bravely demanding the right to democratically choose their own future."
