Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Suspension of Amir Hekmati’s Hunger Strike in Iran
Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today after Amir Hekmati, his constituent who continues to be imprisoned in Iran on false charges, suspended his hunger strike:
“The report that Iranian prison officials have agreed to further review Amir Hekmati’s case and that he will suspend his hunger strike is a positive development. Many of Amir’s Marine brethren, however, will continue the strike in an act of solidarity and support so that Amir does not have to. “Amir has languished in Iran’s Evin prison for over 1,000 days and it is time for him to be reunited with his family in Michigan. If Iran is serious about rejoining the global community, it can help create the trust necessary by releasing Amir. “The American people, the service member and veterans’ communities, and Congress are all watching Amir’s case closely and looking forward to the day that Iran matches its words with action and returns Amir to his family.”
