Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on the Trump Administration’s Zero-Tolerance Child Separation Policy

June 18, 2018

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement after the Trump Administration continues its zero-tolerance child separation policy that is tearing families apart at the southern border:

"It makes me sick to my stomach seeing children being torn away from their parents and being detained in cages. This is not who we are as a country. The reason for this inhumane practice is the Trump Administration's zero-tolerance child separation policy. It is morally wrong and cruel to separate a child from their family. Tearing apart families flies in the face of our American values. I am working on legislation in Congress to reverse these immoral Trump Administration policies."

Congressman Kildee is a co-sponsor of the Keeping Families Together Act, which will be introduced in the House this week to promote family unity. Congressman Kildee's bill will prohibit the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from separating children from their parents. This bill requires an independent child welfare official to review any separation and return the child without harm. It also imposes financial penalties on officials who violate the prohibition on family separation.
