Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Union Election in Canton, Mississippi

August 3, 2017
Press Release
Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) released the following statement today after Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant misrepresented the United Auto Workers and Michigan’s auto industry in advance of the union election in Canton, Mississippi:

“The Michigan auto industry is strong and competitive today because of the UAW's commitment to its members in Detroit, Flint and communities across the country. Governor Bryant’s fictional depiction of Detroit is inaccurate and highly irresponsible this close to the union election. It is important that workers have a voice in advocating for safe working conditions, fair wages and benefits. A fair election where workers can vote whether to join a union is critical in maintaining these conditions.

“In my district, the birthplace of the UAW, General Motors has invested billions of dollars over the past decade. Each time General Motors, Ford or Chrysler invest in the U.S. economy, it is because the hardworking UAW members negotiated and secured that investment in their contract. When workers have a voice, middle class families win. Whether it is helping to create the American middle class or fighting for civil rights, the UAW has worked every day to ensure all people have an equal opportunity to contribute to our economy and support their family.”
