Statement by Congressman Kildee on Juneteenth

June 19, 2021

FLINT—Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement today in recognition of Juneteenth:

"Juneteenth commemorates the moment when the last formerly enslaved people in America learned they were free. Juneteenth is a day of reflection and a celebration of freedom for Black Americans. It's important that we learn from America's history of systemic racial injustice and strive to do better.

"This week, I voted to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. I am pleased that President Biden signed this bipartisan legislation into law. Making Juneteenth a federal holiday is a major step forward to recognize the wrongs of the past, but we must continue to work to ensure equal justice for all Americans."
