Statement by Congressman Kildee on Senate Republicans Voting to Block Voting Rights Bill

June 22, 2021
Press Release
WASHINGTON—Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement today after Republicans in the U.S. Senate blocked bill to ensure that every American has the right to vote:
“Americans shouldn’t have to overcome voter suppression, gerrymandering and special interest dark money just to exercise their right to vote. Yet in many states, Republicans are pushing anti-democratic bills to take away your right to vote. Republicans know they can’t win on their ideas, so they are attempting to disenfranchise you and your right to vote.
“Especially after the 2020 election, the need for H.R. 1, the For the People Act, is clear. Sadly, Senate Republicans blocked further consideration of this bill to expand voting rights, reduce the role of money in politics and clean up corruption in government.
“As my friend and hero John Lewis said, the right to vote is sacred. We must protect the right to vote, which is under attack like never before. In Congress, I will continue to fight to ensure all Americans has equal access to the ballot box.”
