Statement by Rep. Kildee on Report Regarding President Trump’s Taxes

September 28, 2020

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus and member of the Ways and Means Committee, issued the following statement after the latest New York Times reporting on President Donald J. Trump’s taxes:

"Hardworking Americans pay their taxes. But unlike middle-class families, the President has abused the tax code to avoid paying his fair share. President Trump paid just $750 in federal taxes—less than firefighters, teachers, and millions of other American workers.

"The American people deserve to know that their elected officials are acting in their best interests, not their own interests. Sadly, the President has used his time in office to push for massive corporate tax cuts for the rich and well-connected, while workers and families struggle to get by.

"The New York Times report provides further evidence that the Ways and Means Committee, led by Chairman Richard Neal, must have access to the President's tax returns to ensure the President, is in compliance with federal tax laws."

Since 2019, the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee has sought six years of the President's personal and business-related entity tax returns. The President's administration has defied subpoenas from Congress and currently is fighting a lawsuit filed by the Chairman in federal court regarding access to the returns.
