Statement by Reps. Kildee and Blumenauer on U.S.-Mexico Remediation Deal Regarding General Motors Facility in Silao

July 8, 2021
Press Release
FLINT—Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus and member of the Ways and Means Committee, and Ways and Means Committee Trade Subcommittee Chairman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03) issued the following statement on today’s announcement that the United States and Mexico have reached a remediation deal — as outlined in the Rapid Response Labor Mechanism feature of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement — to address labor concerns at a General Motors facility in Silao, Mexico:

“For trade agreements to actually protect workers and the environment, they must be enforced. We sought to address this problem with the first-of-its-kind Rapid Response Mechanism in the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. In the case of the General Motors facility in Silao, President Biden and U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai showed their steadfast commitment to acting swiftly to address violations of our trade agreement. We are encouraged by today’s announcement that the U.S. and Mexico have reached a remediation plan. This is an important step forward and our committee will continue to closely monitor the process. Workers have a right to unionize, and we will not tolerate attempts to prevent them.”
